“If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15)

Have you ever claimed a promise of God for guidance, provision, or protection in the midst of a difficult situation? Most of us have. But sometimes we focus so much on what we want God to do that we lose sight of God Himself. The key to living in God’s promises is being more aware of God’s presence.

Moses understood this truth. As he led Israel to the promised land, Moses was keenly aware of their need for God’s presence. Throughout Israel’s journey God was there to guide their way, provide for their needs, and protect them from harm (Exodus 13:21–22; 16:4–5). It was God’s presence that distinguished Israel from every other nation (Exodus 33:16).

The same principle is true for believers today. The difference is that God’s presence isn’t merely around us but in us (1 Corinthians 6:19). The Holy Spirit lives within every person who places their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, and His indwelling Spirit is what distinguishes believers from the world. But having His presence and being aware of Him are not the same thing.

The more you live in conscious awareness of God’s presence, the more the Holy Spirit shapes every area of your life. You’ll only possess outwardly what you’ve surrendered inwardly. We often want God’s promises while resisting His authority over our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Being aware of God’s presence changes what we think, say, and do. It draws us toward obedience and away from compromise.

So, if you want to live in God’s promises, live in greater awareness of His presence. And that boils down to two things: the Holy Spirit and a willing heart. If you are a genuine follower of Christ, you received all of the Holy Spirit the moment you were saved. So the question isn’t how much of God you have, but how much of you He has. God is always present in your life and continually aware of your needs. Live today as aware of Him as He is of you.
