“Trust in the Lord and do good.” (Psalm 37:3)

Trust is foundational to the Christian life. We trust God to save us from our sins and secure our eternal future. But what about everyday life? We struggle most when circumstances feel uncertain or out of control. Trusting in the Lord isn’t just believing right. It means giving your burdens to God and resting the full weight of your cares on Him. So, where do you start?

Start with your expectations. The problem is that we often trust God to do a certain thing in a certain way. And when events unfold differently than we prayed, we feel disappointed—like God has let us down. But genuine trust isn’t confidence in a particular outcome; it’s confidence in God’s character. When God says, “Trust Me,” He isn’t calling for blind faith. He’s calling for confident reliance on who He has revealed Himself to be.

Throughout the Bible, God proves Himself faithful, powerful, good, merciful, and sovereign. He is our security and our sure hope. His ways are higher than ours, and His thoughts are beyond our understanding (Isaiah 55:8–9). That’s why you can trust Him—regardless of the outcome. Trusting the Lord means choosing to believe He is reliable even when life feels unreliable.

Proverbs 3:5–6 describes what wholehearted trust looks like: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Notice that the promise of His guidance is connected to total reliance—on Him alone. Not partial trust. Not backup plans. Total trust.

In what situation are you leaning on your own understanding instead of God’s? Where are you trusting your instincts more than His Word? Entrust the full weight of that situation on His unchanging character. He remains steady even when everything around you feels shaky. Cling to Him—not to a specific outcome.

The more you know God, the more naturally you will trust Him. And Psalm 37:3 reminds us that trust leads to action: “Trust in the Lord and do good.” Giving your burdens to God frees your mind and emotional energy to do the things He’s calling you to do. You may not understand exactly how God is working, but you can know who He is. And that’s enough to trust Him.
