“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3)
Do you desire to obey God’s Word, or does it feel more like a duty? When obedience feels like a burden, that’s a warning sign that something deeper is out of alignment. Because keeping God’s commands is about far more than what you do. It also involves what you love and how you think. In other words, obedience doesn’t begin with your actions; it begins within your heart. The solution is to realign internally.
Start by aligning your will with God’s revealed will in Scripture. This isn’t surface-level compliance but inward surrender to His authority (Luke 22:42). It means listening carefully to Scripture and responding to what you hear. We are called to be “doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:22).
But be careful not to confuse obedience with mere rule-keeping. That path leads to legalism. External compliance is not the same as willing obedience. Remember, you’re not trying to earn God’s love—you’re responding to it. That’s why His commands are not burdensome. At its core, obedience is about relationship not rule-following (John 14:21). So when obedience feels like a burden the issue isn’t the command—it’s the heart.
When you obey from the heart, it changes everything. It produces a steadfast, unshakable joy that’s not dependent on your circumstances. Jesus said, “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love…these things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full” (John 15:10–11).
Obedience also brings stability. Jesus described it as building your life on a rock—firm and secure, even when storms come (Matthew 7:24–25). A life rooted in obedience won’t collapse under pressure because it’s grounded in truth.
So ask yourself: What command in Scripture feels difficult to obey right now? And why? What’s out of alignment in your heart or mind that’s making obedience feel burdensome? Remember, you’re not following rules; you’re following Jesus. When your focus is on your relationship with Him, your actions will flow from love and be anchored in faith. Because when your heart and mind are right, your hands will follow.
