“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit.”  (Ephesians 6:18)

Can you connect the dots between your prayers and what’s happening in your life? Most believers want to pray effectively, but many of us struggle to see results. So, what keeps your prayers from being effective? What does effective prayer actually look like? The apostle Paul gives us the answer: pray in the Spirit.

Praying in the Spirit means praying in harmony with God’s Word and God’s will. It’s recognizing that you don’t have the strength, wisdom, or resources to face life on your own—and choosing to rely completely on Him. Praying this way makes you more sensitive to what God is doing around you. You start to become more concerned about the needs of others, not just your own wants.

Prayer isn’t a tool for getting what we want—it’s communion with God. That’s why James 4:3 warns, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.” Too often, our prayers are driven by self-interest rather than a desire for God’s glory. The ultimate purpose of prayer is to align your will with God’s will. It’s asking for what God already wants, not asking Him to do what we want.

Why do we treat God’s will like bad tasting medicine? In reality, His will is what we would choose if we knew what He knows. When you pray this way, Scripture promises that your prayers are heard and your requests are granted (1 John 5:14–15). That’s what Jesus meant when He said, “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:14). Praying in Jesus’ name isn’t just tagging His name to the end of our prayer; it’s praying what He would pray!

So, if you can’t connect the dots between your prayers and what’s happening, do a heart check to see if you’re praying in the Spirit. Is there unconfessed sin blocking the line? If so, identify it and turn from it. Is your request in harmony with God’s Word and fully submitted to His will? Even good prayers miss the mark if not aligned with Him. Effective prayer begins and ends with a surrendered heart that simply says, “Lord, Your will be done.”
