“And take the helmet of salvation” (Ephesians 6:17)

Ever wonder why common sense isn’t common anymore? Some of the things people say they believe sound insane. The helmet of salvation is God’s provision for thinking rationally and rightly. It protects your mind, shapes your worldview, and affects how you see yourself.

This piece of the Christian’s armor protects your mind from cultural thinking that defies both common sense and biblical truth. Thinking rationally starts with salvation—because when you’re saved, you receive the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Through the Holy Spirit, the mind of Christ within you helps you recognize the enemy’s attempts to deceive. It means you can see truth clearly in a world filled with chaos and confusion.

Thinking like Jesus is thinking biblically. You start viewing life through the lens of Scripture instead of the lens of culture. The world wants you to believe that ordering your life around the Bible makes you narrow or judgmental. Putting on the helmet of salvation keeps your thoughts anchored in what God says, not in what the crowd shouts.

Salvation also changes how you think about yourself. Philippians 2:5 says, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Verses 6–11 describe Jesus as humble and obedient, even to death on a cross. Though He had every right to exalt Himself, He chose submission to the Father’s will. That’s what a redeemed mind looks like—humble, obedient, surrendered.

The helmet of salvation helps you think like Jesus—rationally, righteously, and truthfully. But it doesn’t happen automatically. You must yield your mind to the Holy Spirit, letting Him guard your thoughts, filter what you take in, and shape how you respond. When your mind is under His control, you’re protected from deception and equipped to discern truth from lies.

How are you doing in the battle for your mind? As a follower of Jesus, you have everything you need to think rationally and rightly. The question is: Are you clinging to biblical truth or bowing to cultural pressure? Submit to the Holy Spirit. Let Him guide and guard your thoughts today. When your mind is guarded by truth, your life will reflect the peace and clarity that only come from walking with Jesus Christ.
