The Passing of America

The Bible says, “the world is passing away” (1 John 2:17). It only stands to reason that the passing of America is included. Now, I’m not a pessimist nor do I consider myself a conspiracy theorist. But in order to see things realistically, I like to evaluate them biblically. I love this country. I’m grateful to be both an American and a Georgian. So, I’m not saying this with any sense of satisfaction but because we’re watching the inevitable become reality.

There are many who think America will simply fade into the sunset as the shining city on the hill. Of course, we wouldn’t be the first superpower in history to vanish; Babylon and the Roman Empire come to mind. And remember when the Soviet Union was too big to fail?

The Bible tells us that the end times will see the rising of a one world government led by one world leader. Such a government cannot exist with a superpower still in place. So, how will the passing of America happen? It’s only speculation, but here are three ideas.

The Rapture of the Church

Most reliable researchers believe that somewhere between eight to ten percent of Americans are Christians. It would certainly throw the country into chaos if 30 million people suddenly disappeared. The U.S. could be vulnerable to a takeover or open to a new coalition with neighboring countries. Just think about the effect of similar scenarios around the world.

Outside Attack

The events of 9-11 proved that we’re vulnerable to outside attacks. Almost two decades later there’s still plenty of anti-American sentiment out there. Our vulnerability to attack has more to do with who’s in Washington than who’s on the battlefield. Many of our government leaders don’t see the need for stronger border security or restrictions. Those who consider America an enemy could possibly infiltrate through areas of weakness.

Destroyed from Within

Events in recent days have shown that we’re certainly capable of destroying ourselves. The Bible clearly says that unresolved division leads to inevitable destruction (Mark 3:25). To say that America is divided is an obvious understatement. The streets in many major cities resemble third world countries in the heat of civil war. Without resolution, it’s possible that we could go the way of the former Soviet Union, giving birth to several smaller countries. The nation we know today would just be the former United States of America.

Would God Allow This?

Why would God allow the passing of America? After all, we’re a country founded by Christians; a nation built on the Bible. For one, we as a nation no longer value the Bible. Furthermore, we stopped seeking to please and honor God with the operation of our government. And, not only does our society ignore God, it promotes and protects those who attack Him and everything He declares as sacred.

If our nation no longer serves God’s purpose, then how can we expect His protection or enjoy His provision? America’s weakness is not that we’ve become too big to fail, we think we’ve become too big for God.

Advice for American Believers

Believers have been anticipating the passing of the world since the first century. One thing is certain – we’re closer today than ever before. So, there’s no better advice for American believers than what the apostle Paul offered to Timothy concerning the last days. “But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:13-15). Regardless of what you see or hear – “Continue on Christian!”
