“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2)
In recent devotions, we’ve talked about the importance of understanding what motivates your actions and shapes your affections. But a renewed heart without a renewed mind leads to instability, confusion, and spiritual weakness. If your thinking isn’t shaped by truth, your life won’t be either. Scripture draws a clear distinction between being conformed and being transformed.
Conformity happens when we become passive in our walk with Christ. A conformed mind is shaped from the outside in—by cultural pressure, shifting values, and unchecked assumptions. Without discernment, it’s easy to just go along to get along. And over time, the world will press you into its mold.
Transformation, on the other hand, is intentional. While your identity in Christ has been changed from the inside out, you still have a daily choice about where you set your mind. “For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (Romans 8:5–6).
Renewing your mind begins by allowing the Holy Spirit to reshape how you think through the truth of God’s Word. It’s measuring reality by Scripture, not by feelings or cultural narratives. This doesn’t mean ignoring your feelings, but filtering them through truth: “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth” (John 17:17).
Loving the Lord fully means bringing your whole person under His Lordship—heart, soul, and mind (Mark 12:30). The heart determines what you love, and the mind determines how you think about what you love. Together, they shape how you live. That’s why what you allow into your mind matters—it doesn’t just influence what you think, but how you think, affecting every attitude and decision.
So where have you become passive in your thinking? Do you absorb what you hear, or do you evaluate it through a Spirit-led perspective? Trying to change outward behavior without renewing your mind will always lead to frustration and hypocrisy. Lasting change comes by setting your mind on the things of the Spirit, and letting God’s truth guide how you think, choose, and respond.
