“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
What we believe to be true is often in conflict with what we feel, especially in seasons of heartbreak and grief. We know God is good and that His grace is sufficient. But when the pain is fresh and the questions are heavy, those truths can feel distant. So what does the grace of God actually look like in real time? God meets you in the pain.
So be honest with God in your heartache. Pour out your grief, confusion, and sorrow before the Lord. Throughout Scripture, people cried out to God with raw honesty. They asked hard questions. They expressed fear, disappointment, and anguish. But honest, biblical lament always moves us toward God, not away from Him.
Sometimes God gives answers, and sometimes He simply gives Himself. Often the deepest answer God gives is not an explanation but His presence and faithfulness in the middle of the storm.
C. S. Lewis once wrote, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” Lewis understood something many believers eventually learn through suffering: pain exposes our illusions of control. It reveals how dependent and fragile we really are. It forces us to confront deeper realities about God, life, and eternity.
We often ask God why He allows certain things to happen, but Scripture reminds us that God never wastes pain. While it’s okay to ask, “Why is God allowing this?” we should also ask, “God, what do You want to accomplish through this?” Even in suffering, God is working. He uses pain to draw us closer, not push us away.
No matter the source of your pain, it can become productive in the hands of a loving and mighty God. Romans 5:3–4 says, “We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope.” God can take what feels unbearable and use it to deepen your faith, strengthen your character, and anchor your hope in Him.
If your heart is heavy today, don’t run from God. Run to Him. God meets you in the pain, and He will not waste a single moment of it.
