“I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst” (John 6:35)
Every human being hungers for acceptance, security, and significance. And we look for those things in all kinds of places and in all kinds of ways. Maybe you’ve sought acceptance in relationships, security in wealth, or significance in a career but still feel empty and unfulfilled. That’s because God created you with a capacity for wholeness that only He can fill. You’ll never be fully satisfied as long as you’re trying to replace God with anything or anyone else.
Jesus promises satisfaction on the deepest level—in your soul. He is the bread of life and the living water (John 4:14). Only He can satisfy your soul because He is life itself (John 14:6). So why do believers still look to earthly things for their identity and purpose? Because we often trade abundant life for immediate gratification.
Henry Blackaby said, “In our day Christians continue to reject the living water of Christ to seek surrogate, earthly gods that cannot satisfy. The twofold tragedy is that not only do we foolishly reject our loving heavenly Father, but the artificial substitutes we replace Him with cannot sustain us. They may offer temporary comfort and pleasure, but only God can provide abundant life.”
When you replace God with anything or anyone else—that’s an idol. And idols reveal that we hunger and thirst for the wrong things. This isn’t about your salvation but your sanctification. When you don’t eat a healthy diet your physical growth will be stunted. The same is true spiritually—you cannot grow more like Jesus by filling your heart and mind with junk.
So what do you hunger for? Do you have a growing appetite for the Word of God, the presence of God, and the people of God—or have other things taken their place? What you turn to for acceptance, security, and significance reveals what you truly trust. And anything you put in the place of Christ will leave you empty. Only Jesus—the bread of life and the living water—can fully satisfy.
