“But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.” (Jonah 1:3)

Running from God takes many forms. Sometimes it’s not about what we’re doing but what we’re not doing. You may be quick to recognize obvious sins, but what about the things God tells you to do that you simply choose not to do? All disobedience is a big deal to God. Jonah didn’t murder anyone. He didn’t steal or commit some scandalous act of immorality. He simply didn’t do what God told him to do.

God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, and Jonah ran the other way. Jonah wasn’t merely running away from Nineveh. He was trying to run away from God. The problem is, we can change our location, but we can’t escape His presence (Psalm 139:8). When Jonah tried, God sent a storm. And the further Jonah went in his rebellion, the worse the storm became. Likewise, the deeper we go into disobedience, the greater the consequences can become.

And Jonah’s sin didn’t affect him alone. The sailors were caught in the storm because of his rebellion. We may think our disobedience is private, but our sin can impact the people around us—often, more than we realize.

When asked who he was, Jonah said, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land.” (Jonah 1:9). Jonah knew exactly who God was, yet he was still running from Him. His sin was being uncovered. There’s an old saying: Whatever we cover, God uncovers, and whatever we uncover, God covers.

Running from God takes many forms. You may try to avoid conviction by staying busy, ignoring God’s Word, or refusing to listen to biblical truth. But you can’t outrun God. And if you keep trying to cover your sin rather than confess it, God may just uncover it for all to see.

So what has God told you to do that you’re not doing? Remember, sins of omission are still sin. What is God using to get your attention? His correction is an expression of His love—to bring you back where you need to be. Don’t wait for the storm to get worse before you respond. Trust His love and take that first step of obedience today.
