“He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice, and He preserves the way of His godly ones.” (Proverbs 2:7–8)
The previous devotion issued a challenge to seek wisdom as you would search for hidden treasure (Proverbs 2:4). Like any precious treasure, wisdom has great worth. Solomon explains to his son that godly wisdom is about more than making better decisions or knowing the right thing to say or do in the moment. He shows us why wisdom is worth pursuing.
One of the greatest rewards of seeking wisdom is knowing God. Solomon says, “Then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:5). Your perception of God will determine your desire and diligence in seeking Him. That’s why you need to make sure you have a right understanding of who the Lord is. Remember, the pursuit of wisdom is actually the pursuit of God.
The fear of the Lord means recognizing His greatness, holiness, authority, justice, kindness, mercy, wisdom, and power—and living in light of who He is. That’s why Proverbs 1:7 tells us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” When you see God rightly, you begin to see everything else rightly too. Even yourself.
And the more clearly you see who God is, the less power everything else has over you. You might not always understand what is happening around you, but knowing who God is changes how you respond to it. When you live in awe of Him, you’ll begin to think and act in wisdom.
God promises to guard those who walk in His wisdom (Proverbs 2:7–8). That doesn’t mean He’ll shield us from hardship and suffering but that He’ll guard us through it. To guard means to watch over or give vigilant care. So, even when you wonder: Why? Or when the way ahead isn’t clear, you can count on His promise to watch over you.
That’s why wisdom is worth pursuing—it produces confidence. Not confidence in yourself or your ability to figure everything out, but confidence in the God who knows everything. Does the future feel uncertain? You don’t have to have all the answers today, and you don’t have to figure it out alone. Seek His wisdom. Trust His guidance. And walk confidently with Him.
