“Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding.” (Proverbs 2:2)
Have you ever wished God would just tell you what to do? Most of us have. We ask God for wisdom about making hard decisions, dealing with health issues, and navigating relationships. We pray for wisdom because salvation doesn’t automatically make us wise. Wisdom must be sought. Who better to teach us about seeking godly wisdom than Solomon, the wisest man to ever live?
Solomon was instructing his son on how to receive wisdom, not earn it (Proverbs 2:1). God graciously gives wisdom but we must desire it enough to pursue it. That pursuit begins with a heart that values wisdom and a voice that cries out for it (Proverbs 2:3). In other words, seeking wisdom is asking God for what only He can give. Ultimately, pursuing wisdom is a desire for God Himself, because there is no godly wisdom apart from Him.
Wisdom is knowing God’s perspective about what is right and how to live it out. Knowledge tells us what is true. Understanding helps us grasp what that truth means. Discernment helps us distinguish between truth and error, good and evil, and the right path and the wrong path. Wisdom shows us what to do with that truth and enables us to do it rightly.
For example, a sign says, “Bridge out ahead.” Knowledge is reading the sign. Understanding tells you that continuing would be dangerous. Discernment recognizes that you need to choose another route. Wisdom is turning around.
Knowledge about God that never changes the way we live is not wisdom. James reminds us that we must be doers of the Word, not hearers only (James 1:22). Godly wisdom is demonstrated through obedience. So, if you’re praying for wisdom about an upcoming decision, ask yourself: Am I already obeying God in areas where He’s been clear? Am I following His guidance with my finances? My speech? My relationships?
Seeking godly wisdom is a lifelong pursuit of knowing God’s Word, praying fervently, and yielding to the Holy Spirit. How desperately do you desire godly wisdom? What we truly value, we pursue. Do you value God’s guidance over every other source? The question isn’t whether God is willing to give you wisdom. The question is: Are you willing to seek it? Today, “seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures” (Proverbs 2:4).
