“So Jesus said to the twelve, ‘You do not want to go away also, do you?’ Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.’” (John 6:67–68)

Many people begin following Jesus expecting life to get easier—until hardship or disappointment tests their faith. So how do you remain faithful when others drift away, compromise, or abandon the faith altogether? The answer begins with understanding the three kinds of followers in John 6: the crowd, the larger group of disciples, and the true disciples.

Most of the crowd was attracted to Jesus because He fed them miraculously (John 6:26). They wanted the benefits and blessings without obedience. The larger group of disciples viewed Jesus as a good teacher. They listened and followed for a time, but many were never truly surrendered to Him.

As long as Jesus seems helpful, comforting, or beneficial, people stay close. But when following Him becomes costly, many begin to pull away. Both groups shared the same mindset: “What have You done for me lately, Jesus?” Why is that so dangerous? “As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore” (John 6:66).

People walk away when following Jesus costs more than they expected—when His Word confronts sin, when obedience requires sacrifice, and when surrender challenges their desire for control. In other words, when they think He’s asking too much (John 6:60). Jesus didn’t compromise truth to accommodate the crowd then, nor will He now.

Then there were the true disciples—those who believed Jesus alone was the source of life. Thousands began following Jesus in John 6, but by the end of the chapter only a small group remained. Jesus asked, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” Peter confessed what true disciples still know today: Jesus is our only hope. Only His words give eternal life.

Jesus is still looking for true disciples. When you feel discouraged or disappointed, remember that the world offers temporary comfort but only Christ gives lasting hope. Even when Scripture challenges your thinking, confronts your sin, or calls you to surrender something difficult, His truth remains trustworthy and life-giving. Don’t drift away when following Him becomes hard. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and hold tightly to His Word—the only words that give abundant and eternal life.
